Describing your character Empty Describing your character

Post  Hisao Mon May 30, 2011 6:10 pm

So, this is the topic I mentioned in the thread News & Announcements. Below every small title, I wrote whatever information you can mention about that specific aspect. For things such as personality, I even listed adjectives or words that can describe your RPC. It's really not hard anymore now to pick what suits your character. Is there a word you don't know the meaning of? I understand that, as I'm not English either, so you can either just not use those words, or look them up on the online dictionary (>>dictionary<<).

The second post then, contains the code for the entire thing. So with the bold and underlined and whatever. It just needs you to copy paste it to your own RPC sheet topic, and to fill it all out. Yes, I know it's a lot of work, but so was making this entire thing. And I think it'd be better to leave questions open than to use a form of your own and miss something out, or have a very confusing form for others who want to know more about your character.

HINT: When you copy the code below, you could save it in an extern document first. It is possible that the mods or admins mark things in red for you to change. In that case, you can just, instead of editing the topic first, edit it in your file. You save the file again, and just copy paste everything from it into your topic, instead of the old content.

Love,
Hisao~

Full Name:
Make clear which ones are first, middle, and last names. Asian names for instance have a different order, and people in Spain have a very long (double) surname.
Is your character a female whose last name changed? Put her girl's name between brackets.
You can add name meanings and origins as well, certainly if this is relevant or if this matches your RPC's past or personality.

Titles:
Your character can have a lot, or none at all: titles. There is titles of honor, royal titles, profession titles, ... If your RPC doesn't have any, just put "none" or "/". It's always possible that your character gets one in the future, or that more titles should be added.
Titles of honor – earned at later age because something (ex: "Sir", "High Priestess of x")
Royal titles – inherited titles (ex: "King of x", "Empress of y")
Profession titles – title only worn in the context of the character’s job/profession (ex: "Doctor (Dr.)")

Aliases and nicknames:
Alias = a name given in other circumstances, at another time, or in another place. (False names, peudonymes, stage names.)
Nickname = a short name given to someone as easier substitute, to show affection, familiarity or to ridicule. (Abbreviations of first names, names based on physical/personality trait.)
If some people or some circumstances cause your character to be called differently, make sure to add those as well.
Ex: "Nickname: Silver (what he calls himself). Alias: Terry Grey (the false name he's registered under in the bounty book)"

Gender:
Not that many options for this one. Most races have male/female.
In case the race you picked is an exception (like the Thalassai, who have only females), you can state so.
Ex 1: "Female (like all Thalassai)"
Ex 2: "Neuter (self-reproducing race)"

If your character looks androgynous, used to be the other gender, or cross-dresses, you will have to put it further on (past, appearance, attire, ...). It however won't hurt to put it between brackets shortly, or to explain it twice.

Race:
Your character can be a pure-blood (even if it does not have blood) or a hybrid (a mix of different races).

If your character is hybrid, please explain this fully. What races are within them? What parts of their family are of what race? Which weaknesses and which strengths were passed on from what race?

Ex: "Hisao is a half-angel. His angel half is from father's side. The other half, the human one, is from mother's side. His magical abilities are from his father, mortality from his mother, and physical abilities such as speed and advanced senses are a mix of both."

REMARK!! Even if your character itself, nor the (NPC/RPC's of the) environment, knows the exact species, YOU are still supposed to know. "No one knew Shadow's exact race, but the fact that he sure had demon parts, lycan parts and that he could do shadow-mancing." is a mere excuse. I do NOT care if you even have to draw an entire family tree out and describe it here, YOU are the almighty creator and your character will NOT be valid without this as basic info.

This topic can be of help describing the race: >>clickie<<

Origins/birth:
Continuing with the last question, this however specifies more the location and circumstances of the birth of your character.

What you could/should write about:
  • birth date + hour
  • measurements at birth
  • location
    - in case existing: country, state, city, ...
    - in case self-created: add a short description to it or put a link to the description if it's somewhere extern
    - in case fictional: (unless dead) the creator must have given permission for you to use their place - (link to) description must be added, as well as EXPLICIT credit to the creator
  • environment (hospital, taxi, at home, ...)
  • who was present (in the room, at the door)
  • situation mom and dad (financial, relational)

Relatives:
Partner:
Your character can have none, but their love life can also be more complicated than that. In case they also have a secret lover, in case their partner is a slave or a colleague/superior at work, explain this fully. With multiple relationships, don't forget to mention the relationships between the partners themselves as well. Do they know each other? Do they know of each other? Triangular relationship? Something like that.

Apart from the amount and the relations between partners, there is also the status of intimacy. Partners can know each other longer or less long, which certainly affects the intimacy of their relationship. The 'official' intimacy is probably defined by their commitment: Dating, partnership, marriage, ... Adding both (for every one of the partners) would be preferred.

Family:
  • Name of the father: (add all the titles, full names, and aliases in one line - full explanation like for your own character isn't needed – add a stepfather/adoption father in case your biological one died early)
  • Name of the mother: (add all the titles, full names, and aliases in one line - full explanation like for your own character isn't needed – add a stepmother/adoption mother in case your biological one died early)
  • Names of the siblings: (add all the titles, full names, and aliases in one line - full explanation like for your own character isn't needed – also, add if they are older or younger siblings, and mention in case one of the parents is someone else)
  • Names of the children: (add all the titles, full names, and aliases in one line - full explanation like for your own character isn't needed – best is to add them in chronological order)
  • Names of other (possibly important) family members: (add all the titles, full names, and aliases in one line - full explanation like for your own character isn't needed)
Significant people:
People who aren't friends, but who meant something in your character's life. The reason will most likely be added in the "Past" part, but you can also add it here.

Friends:
Your character's current friends. Put one name per line. Adding past friends is allowed, but put them between brackets or put that they are no longer friends or that they died. It’s also possible to add how they became friends, even though you will probably mention that in the “Past” part too.

Foes:
Some people just must have some kind of enemy that they made in their past. Add their names and further relevant information (why they became foes, for instance). If your character has more than only a few foes, you might want to put them in a certain order. You can do this best either chronologically, or by the amount of hatred/dislike your character feels towards them.

Occupation:
Even though most of the elements of this part will probably be mentioned under “Past”, it is best to put them here as well.
Occupation:
Past occupations: what has your character been/done before? Have they studied at school X for a number of years? Have they been serving in an army or have they had a job somewhere?

Current occupation: what is your character doing now? What is their profession/job/occupation? Since when have they been doing this? Where are they doing this? Etc.

Hobbies/pastime:
Your character’s way of passing time with a specific activity they regularly do.

Personality:
It is best for your character to make a bit of a balanced personality. Not everyone has a perfect personality. Your character can for instance be kind-hearted, but have no courage in battle. They can be extremely smart and verbally gifted, but be selfish. Sometimes, this personality also partially depends on the species: a Drow isn’t played out well if you play them to be truly altruistic.

Want some inspiration? Here is a list of words that you can use to describe someone's personality:
Spoiler:
If some characteristics only apply in certain circumstances, please add that between brackets after the characteristic.

Beliefs and psychology:
Life vision
Does your character have a specific vision on life and the world? Do they have special values or reasons to live for that are really significant in their life? What do they live for?

Religious beliefs
What religion does your character follow?
  • Official religion (Muslim, Jew, Christian, Buddhist, Jainist, Hinduist, Shintoist, …)
  • Existing minority religions, sects, …
  • Self-created religion (in that case, click here to make a new topic about the religion)

What are their religious habits going along with it? Do they have religion-specific holidays they attend to? Or are they more a believer in silence?
Does your character have superstitions too? (Ex. Fear of Friday the 13th.)

Method of thinking:
Does your character have a specific way of thinking, that is not per say a disability or an extreme, just slightly odd or worth mentioning?

Desires/dreams:
What does your character hope/desire/dream for? Do they have any plans still with their life, like making a little family, or winning the lottery, or slaying their first dragon?

Habits:
Does your character have particular habits or rituals? What are their reasons for it? Do they value these habits/rituals highly, or is this just a small part of their life that they have no problem getting rid of?

  • Specific daily routines (after getting up, before going to sleep, around meals, …)

Attire:
This specific section is to put together some standard ‘outfits’ that your character would wear. “Usual” outfit means the one they’d wear daily, “Fighting” serves for when they go into war, battle or a (prepared) fight, “Occasional” would be the fancy costume or dress that is meant for a special day.

  • Clothing:
    - Top (color, size, model, fabric, style, how they got them, ...)
    - Bottom (color, size, model, fabric, style, how they got them, ...)
    - Shoes (color, size, model, material, style, shoe laces/zipper/etc, how they got them, ...)

    - Bag + content
    - 'Props' (things they carry with them: umbrellas, fans, walking sticks, ...)
    - ...
  • Weapons:
    Swords, daggers, guns, poison, ...

Other notable pieces of their wardrobe: (in case they don’t belong to any of above categories, or at least not to any set outfit)
(…)

Residence
Usually, a character has a certain residence they can return to: a house, a cave, a castle, or whatever they live in. About this, you can tell:

(Insert name/short (max 4 words) description here):
  • What is the nature of the mansion? (Mansion, hut, tree house, …)
  • Where is it? (Realm + planet + country + town + street?)
  • What does it look like?
  • Since when do they live there? (And maybe: where did they live before?)
  • Who else lives there?
  • Description of the inside – furnishing (plans are optional, but always welcome)
  • Notable objects that are present in this residence.
  • What is the history of the place itself?

(Second residence…):
Restart the list here if the character has another residence other than their primary one. You can add as many residence as you want, even the past ones (as long as you add the dates when they moved in and from there).
If the character only has one residence, giving it a title is not a must.

Inventory:
Apart from the accessories you already had to mention earlier, your character might also have certain items or weapons they do not always carry around, but that might have a meaning to them. For every single one of them, you can put:
  • Type of the item
  • Made by
  • (If not self-made) Who gave it
  • (If not self-made) How (and why) achieved
  • Appearance
  • Other specifics (what does it do?)
  • History of the item
  • When they carry it around (always, …)

Past
CHRONOLOGICALLY.
Start of their life: history of their parents (and maybe grandparents), where they grew up, etc.

Further on: their education, people they met in their lives, where they travelled, what they saw and what happened to them. There can be things that are so big of an influence that it changed their personality.

Dates or ages in the different stages of their lives can be helpful for you to keep track of your character. If you know another character (of someone else) from your past, make sure your bios match for that part, and that you both agree on the dates, conditions of their stay together, and so on.

Some elements of the other questions (such as past, family, etc) will logically be mentioned again when you are describing your character's past.

If your character were to die in a spar or because of another reason, you are supposed to add the place, conditions, and reason of their death in this as well. Same goes for everything in general that happens while you are already RP'ing them out. This is not just the past that you have written, also the other things your character goes through.

Describing your character Empty The Code

Post  Hisao Sun Jul 03, 2011 11:13 pm

Copy only the content of the Code box. This code is last updated on July 16th, 2012.

Just delete my info as you go, it might still be helpful as you are putting the info in the right place.

Code:

Continuing with the last question, this however specifies more the location and circumstances of the birth of your character.

What you could/should write about:
[list][*] birth date + hour
[*] measurements at birth
[*] location
- in case existing: country, state, city, ...
- in case self-created: add a short description to it or put a link to the description if it's somewhere extern

People who aren't friends, but who meant something in your character's life. The reason will most likely be added in the "Past" part, but you can also add it here.

[i]Friends:[/i]
Your character's current friends. Put one name per line. Adding past friends is allowed, but put them between brackets or put that they are no longer friends or that they died. It’s also possible to add how they became friends, even though you will probably mention that in the “Past” part too.

[color=steelblue][size=18][b]Occupation:[/b][/size][/color]
Even though most of the elements of this part will probably be mentioned under “Past”, it is best to put them here as well.
[size=15]Occupation:[/size]
Past occupations: what has your character been/done before? Have they studied at school X for a number of years? Have they been serving in an army or have they had a job somewhere?

Current occupation: what is your character doing now? What is their profession/job/occupation? Since when have they been doing this? Where are they doing this? Etc.

[size=15]Hobbies/pastime:[/size]
Your character’s way of passing time with a specific activity they regularly do.

[color=steelblue][size=18][b]Personality:[/b][/size][/color]

[color=steelblue][size=18][b]Attire:[/b][/size][/color]
This specific section is to put together some standard ‘outfits’ that your character would wear. “Usual” outfit means the one they’d wear daily, “Fighting” serves for when they go into war, battle or a (prepared) fight, “Occasional” would be the fancy costume or dress that is meant for a special day.

[color=steelblue][size=18][b]Residence[/b][/size][/color]
Usually, a character has a certain residence they can return to: a house, a cave, a castle, or whatever they live in. About this, you can tell:

[size=15](Insert name/short (max 4 words) description here):[/size]
[list][*] What is the nature of the mansion? (Mansion, hut, tree house, …)
[*] Where is it? (Realm + planet + country + town + street?)
[*] What does it look like?
[*] Since when do they live there? (And maybe: where did they live before?)
[*] Who else lives there?
[*] Description of the inside – furnishing (plans are optional, but always welcome)
[*] Notable objects that are present in this residence.
[*] What is the history of the place itself?[/list]
[size=15](Second residence…):[/size]
Restart the list here if the character has another residence other than their primary one. You can add as many residence as you want, even the past ones (as long as you add the dates when they moved in and from there).
If the character only has one residence, giving it a title is not a must.

[color=steelblue][size=18][b]Inventory:[/b][/size][/color]
Apart from the accessories you already had to mention earlier, your character might also have certain items or weapons they do not always carry around, but that might have a meaning to them. For every single one of them, you can put:
[list][*] Type of the item
[*] Made by
[*] (If not self-made) Who gave it
[*] (If not self-made) How (and why) achieved
[*] Appearance
[*] Other specifics (what does it do?)
[*] History of the item
[*] When they carry it around (always, …)[/list]

[color=steelblue][size=18][b]Past[/b][/size][/color]
