The art of drawing runes onto weapons armour or the physical body parts you want the runes to effect is an art only useable by those who know the language the rune that you wish to draw is from, for example Angelic runes and demonic runic drawings. Runes can do many things from healing you wshen you need it, to providing an extra boost of strenght or energy. most runes once used will fade and become useless and will need to be re-drawn.
in some cases the locagtion the rune is drawn for example on the body of another if the healing rune is drawn over the heart it is more effective, this taken into account a quick healing rune drawn on the fore arm will still have the disired effect unless the wounds are critical.
